U.S. wildfire smoke already in Vernon, could hit Kamloops soon: Environment Canada

KELOWNA — After a year of clean, clear sky around Kamloops, a change may be in the offing.

Environment Canada’s Doug Lundquist says smoke from fires in Washington and Oregon has already penetrated the Okanagan and is making its way north.

As of 1:30 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 8), Lundquist said Vernon is already measuring at six on the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI).

“Once it hits 10, it’s really off the chart,” Lundquist told CFJC Today, over the phone from his office in Kelowna. “Here in Kelowna and Penticton, it’s over 10 for an AQHI. So it’s just around the corner. If you’re heading out toward the Shuswap, you might see it creeping into the Shuswap today.”
