Suspected catalytic converter thieves nabbed in Lytton

LYTTON, B.C. — RCMP say a recent interrupted theft in Lytton underscores how catalytic converters have become hot commodities.

According to a news release from Southeast District RCMP spokesman Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, the incident happened on August 22 along Lytton’s Main Street.

After hearing the sound of a power saw cutting through metal, a witness saw a man and a woman cutting at a Honda Odyssey minivan.

When the witness verbally confronted the duo, they got into another vehicle and drove off. Responding officers found the suspect vehicle and made a pair of arrests.

Investigators looking at the minivan in Lytton found the catalytic converter had been almost completely removed.

A 38-year-old man from the Sunshine Coast and a 50-year-old woman from Coquitlam face charges.

Catalytic converters contain copper and other valuable metals. Earlier last month, Coquitlam RCMP posted a video showing how quickly thieves can remove a catalytic converter from a vehicle.
