KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops has been approved for more than $2.5 million in grant money for energy improvements at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre.

In a release, the City says the funding is a mix of provincial and federal money from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program and the Clean BC Communities Fund.

The grant will be put towards energy efficiency upgrades at the city’s largest indoor aquatic facility. It will support performance improvements for the walls, roof and windows, along with the pool’s mechanical, electrical, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems.

Sustainability Services Supervisor Glen Cheetham says the goal is to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “This is a significant investment in this project, which recognizes our commitment to minimizing our environmental footprint,” said Cheetham. “The improvements that have been integrated into this project will help us work towards the goals outlined in the Sustainable Kamloops Plan.”

The improvements will be implemented shortly as construction at the pool is already underway for the Canada Games Infrastructure Improvement Project.

The release adds the retrofit project is sustainably focused in other ways beyond energy improvements. So far 98% of waste materials have been diverted to be recycled at the Kamloops Resource Recovery Centre. The move has prevented over 163 tonnes of material from being sent to the landfill.
