KAMLOOPS — Two new fires that sprung up in the Kamloops region are now under control, according to the B.C Wildfire Service.

The Upper Hat Creek, and Peter Hope wildfires both began Friday evening (Aug. 28), and they are being classified as being held this afternoon (Aug. 29).

Kamloops Fire Centre information officer Taylor MacDonald says seven personnel members are responding to the Upper Hat Creek fire today, which is about 5 hectares in size.

“They are working on the surface fire, and slashing grass fuels in the area.”

Elsewhere, MacDonald says the Peter Hope wildfire is also being held at 4 hectares in size, and crews are mopping up the area this afternoon. There is no word yet on a cause for either of the new fires.

There was a small amount of precipitation last night in some areas, but MacDonald says the fire danger rating throughout the region is still high.

“Human caused fires are preventable, and they detract important resources away from responding to unavoidable lightning caused fires, so it’s a good reminder to everyone to be extremely cautious with their fire usage.”
