BC Wildlife Park putting the call out for fish donations

KAMLOOPS — The BC Wildlife park is hoping Kamloops residents can show their support in the form of fish.

The bears’ denning season is coming up and zookeeper Larissa Deneault says their caloric intake is increasing.

“We have the grizzly bears and then the two sets of black bears,” she said, “so six bears in total here at the park that are all starting to increase their caloric intake to den for the winter. They can have close to 30,000 calories in a day.”

Deneault says the community is quite generous when it comes to donating fresh produce and hopes it can step up and provide fish to feed the bears.

“In order for us to feed the fish out to the animals at the park, or any of the donation meat that we get in, it does has to be under a year old,” Deneault said. “So, we do have some fish that has sort of surpassed that in our freezers that we need to get rid of and replenish with new fish.”

Fish and meat donations are also fed to the eagles as well as some of the animals in rehabilitation.

Fish must be frozen, unseasoned and cannot have been processed or smoked. The park does not accept any ground meat.

Deneault says their food donation bin has been removed to avoid attracting any wild animals to the park. She adds people should call the park’s animal care line at 250-573-3242 ext. 232 before bringing any food donations.
