Province says there have been 53 COVID-19 cases in Kamloops area; 68 new cases in B.C. Thursday

VICTORIA — For the first time, provincial health officials are providing COVID-19 case count totals broken down by local health area in B.C.

The new data shows 53 people have contracted COVID-19 in the Kamloops area since the pandemic began.

These are other totals in the Kamloops area:

• Cariboo/Chilcotin – 3
• North Thompson – 0
• 100 Mile House – 1
• South Cariboo – 5
• Lillooet – 0
• Merritt – 6
• Vernon – 21
• Armstrong-Spallumcheen – 1
• Enderby – 2
• Salmon Arm -7
• Revelstoke – 3
• Central Okanagan – 209

Provincial health officials have previously been reluctant to release more detailed data on cases in communities.

Meantime, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says there were 68 new cases of COVID-19 reported Thursday (Aug. 27), including four that were epidemiologically linked to confirmed cases.

There have now been a total of 5,372 cases reported in B.C., spread through the province as follows:

• 1,737 (Vancouver Coastal)
• 2,818 (Fraser Health)
• 173 (Island Health)
• 429 (Interior Health)
• 137 (Northern Health)
• 78 (Reside outside of Canada)

As of Thursday, there are 906 active cases in B.C., including 22 people in hospital and seven in critical or intensive care. All of the hospitalizations are in either the Fraser or Vancouver Coastal health authorities.

There are 2,810 people under active monitoring by public health officials because they have been exposed to known cases of COVID-19.

The province reported one new death, bringing the B.C. death toll to 204.

The total of those considered fully recovered is now 4,253, or 79 per cent of the known cases.

Dr. Henry reported no new outbreaks in the healthcare system, but one new community outbreak.

Seven people are associated with an outbreak centered on a construction site for a water treatment plant in the southeastern B.C. community of Elkford.

Dr. Henry says six of the seven people associated with the outbreak reside in Alberta, while the seventh patient lives in B.C. outside of Interior Health.
