Fire situation ticking upward in B.C.

KAMLOOPS — The number of wildfires in the province is ticking upwards thanks to a recent dry spell.

There are 72 wildfires burning in the province, 10 new fires being reported in the past two days. 37 fires are burning in the southeast Fire Centre, 5 sparking in the past 48 hours. The Kamloops Fire Centre has 4 new fires in the past two days, bringing the total burning to 19.

More accurate mapping has put the large Christie Mountain fire south of Penticton at 2035 hectares this morning. Things were stable on the fire lines yesterday, but a few flareups have occurred on the southeast flank. 200 firefighters have been assisted by a variety of fire departments throughout the province who have provided support. Some of them were stood down yesterday and returned home.

The largest fire in the province right now is the Doctor Creek fire southwest of Canal Flats in the Kootenays. It’s an interactive fire with an evacuation order in effect. It is listed at just under 3100 hectares.
