Adoption numbers down; however, Kamloops SPCA remains busy during the pandemic

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops and District SPCA is continuing to help animals in the community, despite limiting their operations as a result of COVID-19.

Lisa Fuller, Community Engagement Manager with the SPCA, says the team at the Community Animal Centre has continued to adapt to how they approach the care of animals during the pandemic. Fuller says the number of adoptions from April through July is down significantly from last year. However, she says that’s partly a result of the change in the way the organization has been doing things.

“Since April ’til now we’ve had about 104 adoptions and I think it was around 225 for that same period last year,” Fuller tells CFJC Today. “It sounds like it’s lower. However, we need to keep in mind we’re running at a lower capacity and [monitoring] what we’re bringing in. We have waitlists for intakes because we have to keep our numbers low because of COVID.”

Despite running at less than full capacity, Fuller says there are quite a few animals available for adoption. It might just take a little longer to set up an appointment to view an animal.

“We currently have 77 animals in our care, primarily cats and kittens. We often say it’s kitten season. We have a lot of kittens we’re taking care of and are within foster families right now,” Fuller says. “Most of our animals are in foster care because of COVID. It just helps keep the shelter manageable. Less people, less volunteers needed to clean.”
