Kamloops MP says anything can happen in CPC leadership vote

KAMLOOPS —The federal Conservative party will name a new leader Sunday evening (Aug. 23).

The vote is being held by postal ballot and will determine whether Leslyn Lewis, Peter Mackay, Erin O’Toole or Derek Sloan will replace Andrew Scheer as the leader of the party. Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP Cathy McLeod says her support lies with Erin O’Toole.

“I think at this stage as we look at the recovery from the pandemic I’m not looking for flash, I’m looking for solid leadership,” she said. “I’m looking for someone who’s very thoughtful, so for me Erin (is) very much a leader, very much strategic, very much will have a focus on how we can appropriately move forward and he’ll be able to communicate that message.”

The winner will be announced in a virtual event on Sunday. McLeod adds the party will get behind whoever is victorious in the leadership race.

“I could see three outcomes, to be honest, I could see Peter Mackay, I could see Leslyn Lewis, I can see Erin being the victor at the end because of course, it’s a different system,” McLeod said. “Every riding carries the same amount of weight and it’s a rank ballot, so I think we could have any kind of result, it’s really could depend on how people might rank their second ballot as opposed to how they rank their first.”
