KAMLOOPS – The fast-moving Christie Mountain wildfire has led to a series of evacuation orders and evacuation alerts near and within Penticton.

319 properties near the Okanagan city have been placed under an evacuation order while more than 3,700 more properties, predominately in the southeast corner of Penticton, are under an evacuation alert.

The wildfire broke out Tuesday afternoon, approximately 6 kilometres north of Okanagan Falls. As of 10:12 p.m. Tuesday night, the BC Wildfire Service estimated the blaze measured 1,000 hectares.

The Wildfire Service says the fire is burning in difficult rocky sloped terrain with limited access points for ground crews. Aerial attacks were used on the fire throughout the evening and 21 personnel will remain on-site overnight to continue efforts to develop fireguards. Structure protection personnel will also remain overnight. The Wildfire Service says more resources will be directed to the fire Wednesday morning.
