KAMLOOPS — Pinantan Elementary School has a new playground that has been years in the making.

The Pinantan Elementary Parent Advisory Council (PAC) applied for and received an $85,000 grant from the provincial gas tax funding initiative. Through community fundraisers, the PAC contributed $15,000 towards the playground, which was officially unveiled to the community on Wednesday (Aug. 12).

After finishing fourth in the BCAA Play Here contest two years ago, Pinantan Elementary PAC Chair Nikki Williams pushed harder for the playground. With the help of TNRD Area ‘P’ Director Mel Rothenburger, the PAC received the funding to build the playground, which was built last month. While Pinantan Elementary is home to only about 60 students, Williams says the playground benefits the whole community.

“It’s a gathering place now — socially-distanced,” noted Williams. “It’s just so wonderful to drive past and see different families sitting and enjoying it. It’s given people a place to go now. Before, the kids would rather play at the beach than the playground because our old playground was just so boring.”
