B.C. sees 78 new COVID-19 cases, including four in Interior

VICTORIA — Provincial health officials are reporting another day of concerningly high COVID-19 case counts.

In a news conference, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 78 new cases of the virus Thursday (Aug. 13), bringing the provincial total to 4,274 since the pandemic began.

The cases have been distributed through B.C. as follows:

  • 1,306 (Vancouver Coastal)
  • 2,242 (Fraser Health)
  • 150 (Island Health)
  • 398 (Interior Health)
  • 106 (Northern Health)
  • 72 (Reside outside of Canada)

The number of active cases has jumped to 578, including nine people in hospital and four people in critical or intensive care.

There were no new deaths reported Thursday. There has been only one death in B.C. during August.

An even 3,500 people are now considered fully recovered from COVID-19, or 82 per cent of the total reported cases.

Dr. Henry reported 1,878 people who are in isolation because they are close contacts of those who are positive for the virus. Those people are being monitored by public health officials.

There are no new outbreaks in the healthcare system, but a new outbreak is being monitored at the Okanagan Correctional Centre in Oliver. Dr. Henry says three staff members have tested positive.
