Five people injured in boating accident along South Thompson River

KAMLOOPS – UPDATED: Kamloops RCMP are investigating a boat collision on the South Thompson River yesterday (Aug. 8) that sent multiple people to hospital.

In a release, Sgt. Brian O’Callaghan says around 3:30 p.m Saturday, police were called to the river east of the Pioneer Park boat launch for two boats involved in a collision.

RCMP say an east bound ski boat was moving slowly along the river when a jet boat quickly came up from behind. The operator of the jet boat then lost control, and crashed into the other vessel. The male and female passengers who were injured in the collision were sitting on the lower back deck of the ski boat at the time, and the boaters were able to make it to the shore.

Fortunately, both police and Kamloops Fire Rescue had boats on the South Thompson River already to keep an eye on the Float the River event and were able to respond quickly. According to witness accounts it was remarkable that no one was seriously injured or killed.

Police seized the boats for mechanical inspection and further investigation, and it was determined that alcohol was not a factor with either of the operators of the vessels.

RCMP are continuing to investigate to establish what, if any charges may be supported. Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police are asked to call Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 to provide a statement.
