Summer version of Barb’s Used Book and Music Sale to be held in pop-up format

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Symphony’s fundraising sale will return this month, with a different format for COVID-19 precautions.

A pop-up edition of the Barb’s Used Book and Music Sale is ready to launch next week, after the springtime sale was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The sale first began in 1997 as a passion project of the late Barb Corbishley, who the event is now named after. All money raised goes towards the operating expenses of the Kamloops Symphony, concert productions, and educational programs.

Kamloops Symphony Orchestra Executive Director Daniel Mills says the summer sale begins August 12, and runs Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m – 5 p.m until the end of the month.

It will be held at the orchestra’s offices and music school, located at 6-510 Lorne Street. (Across the courtyard from the historic CNR Heritage Station in Station Plaza.)

“We have decided to actually host it at our very own offices and music school in a reduced fashion,” Mills explains. “Really just as a way to bring the sale back to life, and it also gives us a new format to try out.”

Those checking out the sale can look forward to a wide selection of gently used books, sheet music, vinyl records, DVDs, and CDs, starting at $2 per item.

However, Mills notes there have been changes made to the way people can browse. Each shopper will have a maximum of 30 minutes in the store, and there will be a one-way path through the rows.

“We’ll be setting up both indoor and outdoor tables with spaces, and lots of precautions in place for everyone who is attending.”

Mills adds that they want to make sure everyone is comfortable, so masks will be mandatory for any indoor browsing and occupancy will be limited to 10 people at a time.
