KAMLOOPS — B.C’s police watchdog has been called in to investigate police actions surrounding a recent homicide in Kamloops.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C (IIO) is looking into the circumstances leading up to the August 1 death of a man in the city’s west end.

On Friday (July 31), a woman called Kamloops RCMP and explained she was concerned about the mental health of a male relative. Officers went to the man’s home, but were unable to locate him.

The following day, officers were called to a neighbouring home on Clarke Street, where a different man was found with multiple stab wounds. He was taken to hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Several hours later, the man whose relative had phoned police the day earlier was arrested in connection to the stabbing.

RCMP are continuing to investigate this incident, and the man has since been charged and taken into custody.

Meantime, the IIO says in a release it is “investigating the circumstances surrounding the police’s lack of success on July 31 in locating the man charged in the August 1 stabbing.”

The investigation will determine whether police action, or inaction played a role in the man’s death.
