KAMLOOPS — The beaches are filling up, and so is the water park at Riverside. People flocking outside to get a little sun and heat.

Kamloops is experiencing its first official heatwave of the summer with temperatures expected to near record levels.

“Oh, it’s gorgeous. It’s so nice after all the rain we’ve been having,” one man told CFJC Today while relaxing at the park, “It’s nice to actually get out and get some sunshine. She’s supposed to be hot.”

The thermometre was expected to hit 38 on Monday. Environment Canada has forecast temperatures in the 30s until next Tuesday following the August long weekend.

“When we get into Tuesday and Wednesday, we may see a little bit of a cooling effect,” said Environment Canada meteorologist Bobby Sekhon. “But as we get into Thursday, we’ll see temperatures climb back up to 38.”

Sekhon says there is a chance of thundershowers heading into the long weekend, but temperatures will still remain high.

With nice weather, more people will be getting outside. But with extreme heat comes some dangers: heat exhaustion, dehydration, sun burns, and heat stroke to name a few. People out at Riverside Park are trying to be cognizant of staying safe in the sun. For many, it’s about keeping close to water.

“Water, water, water,” said Fred Miller. “Drink lots of water and stay in the shade. Right now, we’re out of the shade, but we’ve got to get back in.”

“I’d recommend drinking lots of water. It’s super hot out. Wearing all the sunscreen, making sure kids are wearing sunscreen, wearing hats.”

“We’ve been spending a lot of time at the water parks nearby like McGowan and Prince Charles, and we went out to Kamloops Lake this weekend, out to Savona. Spending some time on the boat. Just trying to stay near water.”

For parents, especially ones with small kids, they tell CFJC crews it’s about timing out your day right.

“Yeah, just trying to go out when it’s a bit coller out, so in the mornings or late afternoons, avoiding the direct heat of the day. Then just keeping them geared up in the sun equipment, the long sleeves, the SPF shirts, and keep them hydrated.”

With summer near half over already, and amid all the chaos 2020 has brought, people are going to get out. It’s just a matter of keeping safe in the sun.
