Flood barriers being removed from city parks

KAMLOOPS — Work is underway to remove flood mitigation measures from Riverside Park.

Hesco barriers were set up in both Riverside Park and McArther Island Park to protect essential infrastructure as the river levels rose.

The river has now dropped to a level that the city is comfortable with removing the barriers.

“They (removal crews) moved through McArthur Island last week, and started here Friday,” said Joe Luison, utilities services maintenance supervisor with the City of Kamloops. “We’re hoping to have this section of barriers removed by Thursday afternoon and then crews will come in to clean up the remaining sand and such.”

The City is reminding the public that the area of the Hesco baskets is an active construction zone and people should stay well clear of the barriers and work crews. Kamloops residents are also asked to use caution around the river as it has not fully receded.

“We are still at levels where we’re monitoring,” Luison said, “so if you are boating in the water or taking in any activities around the waterways, be careful, be safe, stay back, and understand that there is still floating debris and stuff.”
