Province chips in $1.7M for healthcare programs at TRU, NVIT

KAMLOOPS — The province is providing nearly $1.7 million for healthcare training at universities in Kamloops and Merritt.

According to a news release from the provincial government, that money will include $500,000 for students at Nicola Valley Institute of Technology in Merritt toward the Indigenous-focused healthcare assistant program and another program that helps healthcare assistants transition to practical nursing.

The government will provide $395,000 to Thompson Rivers University’s respiratory therapy program, specifically those who will care for critically ill patients.

The remaining $800,000 will go toward anesthesia assistant training and a program to help licensed practical nurses upgrade with a bachelor of science in nursing.

In the news release, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training Melanie Mark notes many of those who have participated in these programs at TRU have been crucial in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.
