Kamloops Hospice Association receives donation from BC Interior Community Foundation

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Hospice Association has received a boost in funding through the BC Interior Community Foundation.

A cheque was presented outside the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home Thursday morning (July 23) in the amount of $8,500.

The Hospice Association has struggled financially during the pandemic without its regular fundraisers.

Executive Director Wendy Marlow says this latest donation will be going toward the clinical care side of operations at the Hospice Home.

“That part of our care hasn’t changed, but in fact there’s increased costs because of the personal protective equipment and some of the measures we have to put in place to keep everybody safe,” Marlow said. “So, this will really help ensure we’re putting the things in place to keep visitors safe, to keep our staff safe, and just the ongoing safety supplies.”

The BC Interior Community Foundation gives out around $350,000 to $400,000 on a yearly basis.

This year, the foundation is finding the needs of the community are shifting due to COVID-19.

“A lot of not-for-profit organizations, which we do provide a lot of funds to, they’ve lost some funding or they’ve had to close their doors,” said Foundation President Rob Lemire, “and … the money that they were getting from those programs weren’t having any money coming in, so there’s been a shift in that respect as to why they needed that money and who needed the money.”
