KAMLOOPS — An organization that provides education for children with special needs is fundraising to create an outdoor play space of its own.

Insight Support Services provides an education to students with diverse abilities from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

Chad Pearson, middle school team lead with Insight Support Services, says the school supports many children on the autism spectrum who need a way to burn off nervous energy.

“We’re all about outdoor play for all kids,” Pearson said. “We think it’s a very positive thing and we’ve found that it really helps with children’s social and academic success in the school if they’re able to burn off some energy. They come back inside, they’re ready to go to work, they’re ready to do their schoolwork.”

The school is located across from the Tournament Capital Centre and its students have been able to utilize the track and pool, but there are concerns about crossing the road safely.

Pearson says the goal is to raise $20,000 for a new playground space, which has been fenced off next to the school.

A GoFundMe page has been created and has raised more than $3,000 since July 14.

“We’d love to see a traditional playground, swings, slides, climbing structures, just the typical playground where kids can go and be kids and just come outside and burn off some energy,” Pearson said.

People can donate through the GoFundMe or in person at Insight Support Services located at 929 McGill Rd.
