Disaster Financial Assistance available for British Columbians impacted by summer floods

VICTORIA — British Columbians hit hard by flooding this year can now apply for Disaster Financial Assistance.

The Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, and Emergency Management state in a release Friday (July 17), that the funding is now available for residents in certain regions who were impacted by overland flooding between June 14, and July 13 of this year.

These regions include:

• Cariboo Regional District
• Fraser Fort George Regional District
• Peace River Regional District
• Northern Rockies Regional Municipality
• All First Nations communities, electoral areas and municipalities within the geographic boundaries of these regional districts

Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) is available for homeowners, tenants, small business owners, farmers, charitable organizations, and local government bodies who weren’t able to get insurance to cover disaster-related losses.

Claims can be made in more than one category, and accepted claims cover 80% of the amount of total eligible damage that exceeds $1,000, up to $300,000.

The province also notes that seasonal, or recreational properties do not qualify, and neither to hot tubs, patios, pools, garden tools, landscaping, luxury items, and recreational items.

Applications are due by October 16, and need to be submitted to Emergency Management BC. (A link to access the application can be found here)
