EDMONTON — Unlike some athletes at TRU, swimmers’ dreams to win a gold medal are still alive.

The Canada West announced on Wednesday that swimming and golf championships will go ahead as planned. The athletic association, however, says they are all contingent on how the pandemic is playing out in each province.

The Canada West swimming championships, previously scheduled to take place in November, will be held in early 2021 at the University of Calgary. The USPORTS nationals would go Feb. 25-27.

The golf championships tee off at the Okanagan Golf Club in Kelowna Oct. 2-4. However, TRU does not have a team.

“I’d like to thank our COVID-19 Task Force along with the scheduled hosts of our fall championship sports for the work that went into informing today’s vote,” said Canada President Clint Hamilton. “While we are disappointed that cross country champions won’t be crowned this fall, we will proceed optimistically with plans for the CW Golf Championships and remain hopeful for delivering swimming in the second term.”

The Canada West decided to cancel the cross-country championships scheduled for the University of Saskatchewan this fall.

The fate of other sports like basketball and volleyball will be decided on Oct. 8. In June, Canada West announced that all first-term team sports would happen no sooner than January with reduced schedules.
