KAMLOOPS — A weekend fundraiser for the Kamloops Hospice Association turned out to be a huge success, raising more than $28,000.

The Stop, Drop and Donate event saw many Kamloops residents come through the parking lot at IG Wealth Management on Sahali Terrace Saturday (July 11), bringing money, food, and household items for the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden home.

“It has been a concern. The fundraising came to a standstill, and the donations really dried up, so we were struggling financially there,” notes Kamloops Hospice Association Operations Manager Jenny Quince, “but this is going to go such a long way to help us.”

Alongside operations, money raised will go towards purchasing equipment for patient comfort and mobility, and keeping cupboards stocked. Volunteers who have had family members in Kamloops’ hospice say it’s a relief to be able to maintain the level of care the facility is known for.

Event organizer Marilyn Giesbrecht says her husband was in hospice care prior to his passing in 2011, and she knows firsthand how important a quality facility is.

“I know that during those few weeks, what hospice meant to us and to our family, and the support they gave us. And just the home that was so [homey] to all of us, and the comfort and the empathy. And so truly it’s trying to make sure for people that are here — as Jenny said there have been a little bit of cutbacks — it’s making sure that everybody has the same sort of experience that we did.”

If anyone missed the fundraising event, donations are still being accepted. A wish list of items and a link to donate can be found at www.kamloopshospice.com.
