As erosion near East Shuswap Road worsens, nearby residents call for action

KAMLOOPS — Residents who live along East Shuswap Road are growing more concerned about bank erosion that is compromising the road.

East Shuswap Road is now down to one lane as the Ministry of Transporation assesses the situation. The province in a statement says geotechnical engineers are looking at solutions to stabilize the bank.

Residents who live metres from the road are worried the erosion will only get worse before it’s fixed.

“The concern is the fact that it’s eroding and if is nothing is done, we’re going to lose the road,” nearby resident John Dube told CFJC Today. “With the level of the water right now, it’s not a good thing.”

Tk’emlups te Secwepmc has been assisting the province in coming up with a plan to repair the river bank. Chief Rosanne Casimir says many of her members are affected by the erosion.

“Our planning and engineering department has been on it as well and there’s been communication back and forth. There’s definitely been some active measures. Twice, those pylons have moved and kind of gotten bigger in that area,” said Casimir. “My hope is that the water levels go down and (we can) look at some geotechnical areas to have some remediation.”
