Evacuation Order issued for Cache Creek trailer park

CACHE CREEK – UPDATE- 7:30 AM- Monday, July 6- More than a dozen homes in Cache Creek have fallen under an Evacuation Order as the Bonaparte River continues to rise and fall.

The Village of Cache Creek says the Order was put in place due to the threat of immediate danger to lives in the Riverside Mobile Home Park. Acting Mayor Wendy Coomber said this morning that the order was put in place because they didn’t want to be put in a position of having to evacuate residents in the middle of the night when it would be much more difficult.

The good news is that, according to Coomber, the river level dropped a bit overnight, and she says she’s cautiously optimistic the level will continue to recede. Fingers crossed, she says. But it would only take one good rainfall to bring the level right back up again.

The order was issued at 4:30pm Sunday afternoon. It only affects members of the mobile home park at 1055 Old Cariboo Road. However, more than 100 other properties in the community remain under an Evacuation Alert.

Rains through the region have fueled the growth of the river over the last several days. Saturday morning the Village warned residents of the danger by issuing an Evacuation Alert.

High water and wet weather continues to keep much of British Columbia on flood watch as mudslides, washouts and road closures hit several rural areas. The Columbia Shuswap Regional District says recent heavy rains contributed to a mudslide that wiped out the water system at Seymour Arm, leaving about 500 people south of Salmon Arm without a water supply. Drive B-C says floods washed out a bridge near Horsefly in the Central Interior and high water closed rural roads near Clinton and Cache Creek northwest of Kamloops. B-C’s River Forecast Centre has issued flood warnings for vast area’s of the province near the Fraser and North and South Thompson Rivers.

Flood watches are continuing for the South and North Thompson Rivers, and a high stream flood advisory is still in effect for the Salmon River. Good news is that levels on the North Thompson and the Thompson at Kamloops are easing, while the South Thompson appears to have reached peak levels, although the river remains sensitive to additional rainfalls.

EARLIER- More a dozen homes in Cache Creek have fallen under an Evacuation Order as the fast-rising Bonaparte River continues to swell. The Village of Cache Creek says the Order was put in place due to the threat of immediate danger to lives in the Riverside Mobile Home Park.

The order was issued at 4:30pm Sunday afternoon by Acting Mayor Wendy Coomber. It only affects members of the mobile home park at 1055 Old Cariboo Road. However, more than 100 other properties in the community remain under an Evacuation Alert.

Members of the RCMP will be assisting in alerting residents of the mobile home park of the Evacuation Order. Those who need assistance with the evacuation, should contact the Emergency Services Reception Centre at 250 457-1705.

Once evacuated, affected residents are asked to register at the Reception Centre at the Cache Creek Community Hall at 1270 Stage Road.

When evacuating, residents should shut off all gas and electrical appliances other than refrigerators and freezers. They should close all windows and doors in their home and take with them critical items such as medicine, valuables and keys. All pets should be placed in a kennel or on a leash.
