MERRITT, B.C. — RCMP are looking for witnesses to the Canada Day crash of a high-performance sports car outside of Merritt.

According to Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey of RCMP Southeast District, the rollover crash took place on Highway 5A just south of Merritt, Wednesday (July 1) just before 4:00 p.m., and involved a green 2015 McLaren 650S, similar to the one pictured above.

Investigators believe the sports car was northbound when the driver lost control, hit the back of a semi truck, spun out and rolled several times into the centre median.

O’Donaghey says police were told the driver may have hydroplaned before the collision.

The driver, who is believed to have been the sole occupant, climbed out of the wreckage himself. A passing motorist took the man to hospital for treatment.

The driver sustained injuries that are believed to be non-life threatening. He is a man in his 40s from the Central Okanagan.

O’Donaghey says investigators still want to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash or interacted with the driver. They also want to speak with the driver of the semi truck, as that vehicle was not identified.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact Merritt RCMP at (250) 378-4262.
