Cache Creek fire hall drying out after waterway spills its banks Tuesday

CACHE CREEK, B.C. — The Cache Creek Volunteer Fire Department dodged a bullet from Mother Nature Thursday morning (July 2).

The Canada Day torrent of rain led to a rapid rise in Cache Creek overnight, and at 2:30 a.m., Fire Chief Tom Moe got the call that the creek had spilled its banks and was lapping at the doors of the fire hall.

“I drove down there and, sure enough, it was just about ready to go into the doors, so I started picking stuff up inside off the floor and sealing the doors as best I could,” Moe told CFJC Today. “We thought the river was going to go down but it kept coming up so I paged out the crew and got them down there to help me out.”

Photos Moe sent to CFJC Today show a few inches of water inside the fire hall. It took several hours for the crew to get the building emptied and dried out.

“The river overflowed for maybe an hour and a half and then it started going back down again,” said Moe. “It basically just hit our fire hall and kind of went down the highway. No damage, from what I’ve heard.”

Moe adds some of the fire department’s belongings will need to dry out, but it doesn’t appear there was any serious or permanent damage.
