KAMLOOPS — Canadian Pacific Railway says it has emergency plans in place in the event of a catastrophic incident in Kamloops.

The director of government affairs for CP Rail Mike Lovecchio says the company takes the transportation of dangerous goods as one of its biggest responsibilities.

Taking questions from city council on Tuesday (june 23) via Zoom, Lovecchio reassured Mayor Ken Christian, who has been long concerned about trains carry dangerous goods through the downtown core.

“There’s a significant amount of regulation around the movement of goods that are listed under the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act,” said Lovecchio. “We meet or exceed the compliance for the movement of those named products.”

Lovecchio noted there was a planned emergency exercise this summer that would have involved Kamloops firefighters attending to a derailment of crude cars. He added CP Rail would cover all city costs related to such an incident.

“This is something we take extremely seriously,” he noted. “In the regrettable event of an incident, we’d work to establish a unified command site, which is by far the most efficient means to have information-sharing, to have a coordinated response. For you as a community, you incur, through an incident, some type of incremental expense to the city. It could be around an evacuation. Ultimately, you will package up and provide those bills to us. Certainly, it is a possibility an incident could occur.”
