KAMLOOPS — Kamloops hasn’t had an operating drive-in movie theatre in more than two decades but, for one weekend only, the 20th Century craze will return.

In a news release, the Kamloops Film Society (KFS) says it is partnering with Lee’s Music, GK Sound, Tourism Kamloops and the City of Kamloops to put on a pop-up drive-in theatre on June 25-27. It will be set up in the south-facing parking lot at the McArthur Island Sports Centre.

Dubbed ‘Twin Rivers Drive In,’ KFS plans to show Trolls World Tour and Back to the Future.

Physical-distancing regulations put in place to combat COVID-19 have put a stop to public gatherings for film viewing, including at the KFS-operated Paramount Theatre.

The pop-up drive-in will allow no more than 50 vehicles at a time, with a maximum of six occupants per vehicle.

Tickets are available online exclusively at the KFS website.

Executive director Dusan Magdolen calls the event “a no-brainer” and says KFS had begun working on the idea independently before being approached by the other groups involved.

The province of B.C. has only three permanent, operational drive-in movie theatres — in Enderby, Prince George and Langley.
