Kamloops Fire Rescue extinguishes fire at Emerald Centre shelter

Jun 14, 2020 | 8:10 AM

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Fire Rescue crews were on scene at the Emerald Centre last night (June 13), after a fire broke out in one of the shelter units.

Platoon Captain Wade Lindoff says firefighters were called to the emergency shelter along West Victoria Street just before 10 p.m Saturday night.

“They were able to locate a fire in one of the suites,” he says, “It appears it involved a mattress on a set on bunk beds. The top mattress, and then the spread to the mattress below it. The sprinkler system in the building was activated so it had extinguished much of the fire by the time the crews went in, so it was just a matter of mopping up the hot spots and whatnot.”

Lindoff says they did need to call in Emergency Support Services for 26 of the building’s occupants, who could not stay in the building for the night. Those people were moved to another space in the city for the evening.
