DETERRING CRIMINAL ACTIVITY

Fencing, additional security to be brought in for Victoria Street West corridor

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops and its partners around the Victoria Street West corridor have taken a couple of steps to try to curb criminal activity in the area.

Business owners have complained for months about the presence of people engaged in property crime throughout the area.

Mayor Ken Christian says one of the measures to address this will direct people away from the nearby CP rail tracks.

“A lot of the foot traffic is really going through the railway corridor down to the river,” Christian notes, “So we’re going to put a temporary fence up, and eventually a permanent fence will be erected between 1st Avenue, and the Overlanders Bridge.”

Christian adds a pilot project between several groups will see a security guard patrolling the area throughout the night as well.

He stresses that while something needs to be done to address the increase in vandalism and other criminal incidents, it will take some time to find what works.

“There are a lot of factors, and the real solution is to end poverty, mental health (issues), and addiction, but that’s not going to happen overnight. And while we work towards that, we have to do that in partnership with other organizations that are involved.”
