KAMLOOPS — A new Kamloops-Thompson School District report says more than one-quarter of all students in the district attended school in person at least once last week.

Last week marked the return of in-person instruction after the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic. Kindergarten to Grade 5 students are permitted to attend in person up to 50 per cent of their usual time at school, while Grades 6 to 12 students can attend in person once per week.

The report, prepared by Director of Instruction, Secondary Education and Learning Services Rick Kienlein, states 28.8 per cent of all students went to school at least once during the week.

However, classes were between 11 and 18 per cent full on any given day.

The proportion of Kindergarten to Grade 5 students who attended at least once was 36.7 per cent.

For the older students, the percentage was much lower. 20.3 per cent of students in Grades 6 to 12 attended at least once.

In-person attendance is optional until the end of the current school year. All students continue to spend at least half of their instructional time learning at a distance through online means.

The report will be discussed at the regular Board of Education meeting for District 73 next Monday (June 15).
