LAKE COUNTRY — B.C’s police watchdog has been notified of an incident in the Lake Country area Wednesday morning (June 3), which hospitalized one man.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C (IIO) is now investigating to determine whether police actions or inactions are related to the man’s injuries.

RCMP Southeast District Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey says shortly after 1 a.m on June 3, police were called by a woman who was concerned for the health and safety of a close family member in the Lake Country area.

The caller grew concerned as she couldn’t get ahold of her family member, and provided information to RCMP indicating his immediate safety was at risk.

O’Donaghey says frontline officers found the home, and gained entry. Once inside, the man responded verbally to police when they announced their presence in the home. Officers then found the man in a bathroom with an edged weapon, and despite efforts to de-escalate the situation, the man harmed himself.

BC Emergency Health Services were staged nearby, and were called in to provide first aid before rushing the man to a nearby hospital for treatment.

All details of this incident are now in the hands of the IIO investigation team, and as such, police will not be providing further information.

The Independent Investigations Office is a civilian-led police oversight agency that investigates all police-involved incidents of death or serious harm that may have been the result of the actions of a police officer, whether on or off duty.
