SALMON ARM, B.C. — The provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has issued a tender for four-laning a portion of the Trans Canada Highway into Salmon Arm.

The 2.2-kilometre portion of the highway extends from First Avenue SW to Tenth Avenue SW on the western edge of the Shuswap city.

In addition to the new, medianed highway, the project will include a new bridge over the Salmon River, an interchange at First Avenue SW, frontage roads meant to consolidate highway access and a multi-use pathway for pedestrians and cyclists.

Work is expected to begin this fall.

A second phase of the Salmon Arm West project, still in the design phase, would four-lane another 1.1-kilometre stretch further east.

Total budget for the two phases is $184.7 million, with up to $31.4 million coming from the federal government.
