Wednesday Farmers’ Market returns with craft vendors now permitted

KAMLOOPS — Today (June 3) marked the first Wednesday Farmers’ Market of the season, and with it came the return of non-food merchandise.

The Saturday market has been operating at a limited capacity since mid-April, with food items only.

Last week the province announced that craft vendors would be allowed to return to farmers’ markets in B.C.

In a normal season, around half of each market would be craft vendors.

Two vendors with non-food merchandise showed up at the first Wednesday market.

“Not all of our craft vendors were ready,” said Market Manager Greg Unger, “because they’ve been sitting at home, they didn’t know if or when they would be able to come to market, so a lot of them weren’t even working on their products. So, a lot of vendors have said they’re not ready today, they don’t have the product made yet, but they’re gearing up for Saturday. So, I think Saturday we’re going to see a really good vendor turnout.”

Unger says the Wednesday market will likely run to the end of October. Online order pickups are also available at the market.

Unlike the Saturday market, there is no specified entry point, however, Unger is hoping people will do their part to prevent the spread of illness.

“People have been practicing distancing and it’s just important to realize that safety is everyone’s responsibility, so I’ve talked to the vendors and they’re keeping an eye out in areas around their stalls, but it’s also up to the visitors of the market to just respect everybody’s space.”
