KAMLOOPS — If you’re looking for a socially distant activity for the family, the BC Wildlife Park is now open.

The park re-opened Monday (June 1).

According to General Manager Glenn Grant, there were 235 guests on the first day back and all of them were local.

The park is hoping to attract more guests throughout the Interior, but will not be doing any international marketing.

“We’ll be getting a lot more stay-cations, I think,” Grant said. “There’ll be locals coming within a two or three hour drive of Kamloops to come and visit, so we’re looking forward to welcoming that group of visitors all summer long.”

Grant says even the animals are happy to have more activity back in the park.

The Wildlife Park is encouraging guests to maintain their distance.

Grant says the park is grateful for a supportive community through the closure.

“We received a little over $100,000 in donations in the 10 weeks that we were closed,” he said, “but keep in mind there were 25,000 visitors that we also didn’t get, so we lost about $250,000 in revenue. So what was raised in the community is greatly appreciated and has gone a long way to keeping all of our animals fed and healthy.”
