KAMLOOPS — A group associated with the Black Lives Matter movement is planning a protest in Kamloops.

The group, identified on Instagram as ‘kamloops.blm.movement’, says the protest will take place on Thursday (June 4) at 12:00 noon at Riverside Park.

The event is described as “a protest in honour of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, George Floyd, and the many other unarmed P.O.C. (people of colour) being murdered daily.”

Floyd died in Minneapolis May 25 after a white police officer kneeled on his neck for several minutes. Korchinski-Paquet fell to her death from a Toronto high rise May 27 after an interaction with Toronto police.

In response to a comment asking participants to “keep it peaceful,” organizers say, “that is 100% the plan.”

Organizers advise participants to bring face masks and keep physically distanced in accordance with recommendations surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Those with any symptoms are told not to attend, followed by “but remember, racism and oppression don’t stop for anything.”

A backup location, in case Riverside Park is closed due to the flood risk, is Prince Charles Park.
