KAMLOOPS — Two CFJC Today journalists have been recognized by the Canadian Association of Journalists for their work on a broadcast series.

Videographer Kent Simmonds and former CFJC reporter Ashley Legassic were awarded in the CAJ’s Community Broadcast category Saturday night (May 30) for their series You’re Not Alone: A Deeping Look into Suicide.

The five-part series featured voices of those impacted personally by suicide or mental illness and professional views into how someone can identify suicidal behavior in their loved one. The series delves into how the stigma around mental illness and suicide can be broken down, and identifies gaps in the current mental health system that may prevent someone from receiving the help they need.

Legassic and Simmonds spent several months gathering interviews, writing, and editing the footage before the TV special aired in the fall of 2019.

Due to COVID-19 gathering restrictions, the CAJ Awards were presented online, with finalists able to participate in a live streamed video conference.
