Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for South Thompson

May 30, 2020 | 7:11 AM

KAMLOOPS — Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for several areas in B.C today (May 30) – including the South Thompson.

According to the forecaster, a low pressure system will move into the region tonight, making conditions ripe for severe thunderstorms to develop that could bring strong wind gusts, hail, and heavy rain.

The storms are expected over the north part of the Fraser Canyon, the South Thompson, Nicola, and Similkameen this afternoon.

While this evening, thunderstorms are anticipated to develop over the Okanagan, Shuswap, Boundary region, West Kootenay, and Arrow Slocan.

Drivers are warned to take caution, as Environment Canada says fast-moving water across a road can sweep a vehicle away. Large hail and strong wind gusts can also damage property or cause injury if loose objects are tossed.

Alongside the thunderstorm watch, a special weather statement has been issued for the South Thompson, with significant rainfall expected on Sunday (May 31).

Environment Canada notes widespread rainfall is likely to come overnight and Sunday. Total rainfall amounts of 20 to 40 mm (up to 50 east of Okanagan valley) are expected by Sunday afternoon, which could cause local rivers to rise.
