Fortis crews on site after gas line struck in downtown Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops residents are reminded to call before digging, after a backyard gas line was struck in the downtown area this morning (May 30).

Sean Beardow with Fortis B.C says crews are currently on site at the home near 6th Avenue and Dominion Street, and are working to repair the minor damage.

“A homeowner was just doing some work on their property, and unfortunately hit their service line,” he says, “It looks to be a relatively uncomplicated issue, there’s no evacuations required, and our crews are on site right now.”

He says it’s easier than you may think to accidentally hit a line, and they ask that people call before digging.

“When we look at gas line hits across the year, 90 per cent of them can be avoided by calling before you dig, getting the information of where gas lines are on your property so you can dig safely.”

Depending on the property, Beardow says the lines may be in different spots than where the homeowner may believe they’re in, and it’s important to double check beforehand.

People wanting to dig can request location information at bc1c.ca or by calling BC 1 Call at 1-800-474-6886. There’s no charge for this service and BC 1 Call will notify all member companies that have buried utilities in your yard.
