VICTORIA — The provincial state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic is now the longest in the province’s history.

Premier John Horgan announced Wednesday (May 27) his cabinet has agreed to extend the state of emergency for another two weeks.

Horgan notes the status was first declared ten weeks ago.

“People will remember back to 2017, the horrific fire season that year led to ten weeks of emergency status in the province and we are now exceeding that with, I have to say, no likely end in sight,” said Horgan.

Meantime, Horgan also announced the resumption of sitting in the B.C. Legislature on June 22. He says some MLAs will attend in person, while others will participate remotely.

In announcing the resumption, Horgan praised the pragmatism of all MLAs in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Partisanship has left the building. It may well be returning in June but I do want to say today that I’m grateful for the work of the B.C. Liberal party, the B.C. Green party and my colleagues in the NDP for taking this challenge on not as partisans but as people focusing on the needs of British Columbians.”
