Relief during flood watch, as dry weekend keeps Bonaparte River levels stable

CACHE CREEK — With a flood watch in effect for the Bonaparte River, the dry weekend weather in the Cache Creek area has given Village officials a bit of relief.

Village spokesperson Wendy Coomber says since Friday (May 22), the river has been stable with sunny, dry conditions, and has even started to go down a little bit.

She says the B.C River Forecast Centre told them this weekend would set the tone for this week.

“They told us to expect some rain over the weekend, and if you can get past the weekend into next week, then it should be okay,” she explains, “We haven’t had any rain so far this weekend which is really, really positive for us.”

Coomber says the river is still flowing quite quickly, but it hasn’t come up higher since Friday.

Despite the weather being favourable, Coomber says there has been some bank erosion and damage to several properties, but so far nothing that cannot be repaired.

Due to flood potential, the Village declared a local state of emergency on Thursday, and issued evacuation alerts for about 175 properties.
