KAMLOOPS — There are 75 daycares in Kamloops that have remained open during the pandemic to care for children of essential workers. The Kamloops YMCA’s Family Services department is showing their appreciation for the daycare providers and their workers.

Employees with the Kamloops Y have been going around the city to drop off gift bags for each daycare provider.

“It’s really, really important. I’ve worked int he field for 20 years. I know how much hard work goes behind running a centre on a normal given day,” said Karyn Heit from the Kamloops Y’s Family Services. “With the challenges lately, they need a show of thanks and appreciation.”

The Kamloops Y, which serves the entire Thompson, Nicola and Cariboo regions, will also be delivering the care packages to daycares in those areas.

“In a little gift bag, we have the Early Learning Framework books, which were just released a new version this year. We’ve got local ground coffee, so we decided to support local businesses, as well as a gift card to Tumbleweed Toys,” said Heit. “Just a little way to show ‘thank you.'”

Daycares are included in phase two of the province’s economic reopening, scheduled for after the Victoria Day long weekend. According to the Kamloops Child Care Resource and Referral Centre, there are currently 629 children of essential-service workers being cared for.
