KTTA unclear on details of back to school plan

KAMLOOPS — School District 73 staff and teachers are slowly piecing together a way to safely re-open schools to some students.

President of the Kamloops Thompson Teachers’ Association (KTTA) Laurel Macpherson says they’re working with the school district to hammer out some of the details of the voluntary return to classes.

She adds they’re also waiting for more direction from the province.

“We’re hopeful that we’re going to hear sooner than later about what this is actually going to look like,” Macpherson said. “But, as you can expect, and you can respect, is that administrators have different challenges in each building. Those challenges are going to need to be addressed with each staff individually. So, there’s going to be a general back to work plan, however, we’re hoping that things become more clear in the next few days.”

Currently the school district is planning to open on a part-time scheduled basis for Kindergarten to Grade 5 students some time after May Long weekend.

That means teachers will also be returning to the classroom.

“Teachers are absolutely going to be concerned,” Macpherson said. “There’s going to be guidelines in place, there’s going to be provincial guidelines especially. Teachers will have questions and they will get answers to those questions. The whole idea is to have a plan that’s going to make teachers feel comfortable.”
