Kamloops council to consider reinstating downtown parking fees

KAMLOOPS — The break on parking in downtown Kamloops is about to come to an end.

A report coming to Kamloops council next week will recommend reinstating paid parking in two phases.

Paid parking was nixed on March 20 as it became clear that many businesses were being forced to close as people practiced social distancing in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

However, with Premier John Horgan outlining a gradual return to regular activity Wednesday (May 6), City of Kamloops staff are now recommending an end to free parking.

Staff say on-street parking fees should be restored on Tuesday, May 19, coming out of the Victoria Day long weekend. Employees of downtown businesses will still be able to park for free in City-operated parking lots and the parkades on Seymour Street and Lansdowne Street.

Parking fees would be reinstated for those parking lots and parkades would return on Thursday, July 2.

Downtown businesses have been calling for the change.

Council is expected to vote on the proposal at Tuesday’s regular meeting.
