KCBIA looking to end free downtown parking, as long-term parkers take advantage

KAMLOOPS — At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association (KCBIA) worked with the City of Kamloops to push for free parking downtown.

However, the KCBIA is recommending the city scraps cost-free parking, as many people have reportedly abused the freebies with longer stays.

KCBIA Executive Director Carl DeSantis says the idea was the free up bylaw manpower, and make it easier for customers picking up take-out from local businesses. But DeSantis says many vehicles are parking all day and all night, taking up spots intended for quick stops to keep business flowing.

“Parkades are wide open, and they’re free. But you know what, it’s just not getting any better,” said DeSantis. “And as such, the KCBIA, we’re in favour of restoring parking fees along Victoria Street to support businesses that are trying to survive.”

DeSantis notes that efforts have been made to deter long-term parkers, but to no avail.

Kamloops council noted on Tuesday that they have been made aware of the parking issues from downtown businesses, and DeSantis says they’re waiting to hear what decision will be made to remedy the issue.
