Kamloops Hospice asks for donations during National Hospice Palliative Care Week

KAMLOOPS — This week is National Hospice Palliative Care Week, and the Kamloops Hospice Association is working out a way to hold an annual fundraiser virtually.

The Hospice Association was planning to host its annual Evening to Remember fundraiser at the Coast Hotel this Saturday (May 9).

It’s the single largest fundraiser for the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home and was set to raise $170,000.

While people are no longer able to buy tickets for large gatherings, the Hospice Association is hoping people will donate instead.

“We were going to sell 500 tickets at $125 each and we do have a head start, 50 tickets were turned back into a donation that had already been bought,” said Executive Director Wendy Marlow, “but what I’m asking the community is to consider making a donation of $125 or more for a ticket. Your name will go in for a draw, we have three beautiful baskets and again our theme was Meet us at the Market, so we have some lovely things that we want to do a draw for.”

Some of the sponsors for the event have turned their sponsorship into a donation for a total of $45,000.

The Hospice Association also plans to auction off some garden boxes in order to reach its goal.

The money will support programs and services at the Hospice Home.

“We provide end of life services with our 12 beds, but also a lot of community programs for people who are grieving,” Marlow said. “We just want to honour our families, our patients, and the great support from our community, our doctors, for all the work they do to help people as they go through their loss.”
