Dry April in Kamloops, with 30 per cent of normal precipitation recorded

KAMLOOPS — According to Environment Canada, April in Kamloops was cooler, and drier than normal this year.

Most of British Columbia saw less rain than normal last month, and Meteorologist Lisa Ervin says the local region experienced a similar trend – only getting about one-third of the usual amount.

“The weather station at the Kamloops airport reported 4.6 mm of rain in comparison to what is usually seen, which is 14.2 mm of rain,” she explains, “So really only about 30 per cent of the precipitation that Kamloops normally gets for this month.”

Ervin says the last week of April did bring rainfall to many communities, so the month’s precipitation tally didn’t end up as low as it was shaping up to be.

“As we get into May, June, and July, these are typically the wetter months for Kamloops. Typically we’ll see about 25-40mm of rain and that’s because rainfall in Kamloops is usually driven by convection,” she says, “Summertime convention – so those afternoon showers, risks of thunderstorms, that’s what typically brings precipitation to the Kamloops area.”

Short term, Ervin says the tail end of this week is expected to have more sunshine, leading into a drier period over the following week.
