Despite relaxed deadlines, City of Kamloops asks homeowners to pay taxes on time

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops has relaxed penalties for late payment of property taxes this year — but is asking homeowners not to take advantage of the leniency unless absolutely necessary.

At this week’s regular meeting, Kamloops council approved a relaxation of penalties for late payment as an acknowledgment of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Typically, a 10 per cent penalty is levied as of the day after the tax deadline — which will be July 2 this year.

This year, homeowners will have until July 31 to pay without penalty. Those who pay between August 1 and October 1 will incur a five per cent penalty.

The 10 per cent penalty will come into effect on payments made after October 1.

In a news release, Corporate Services Director Kathy Humphrey encourages homeowners to pay their taxes on time regardless of the grace period. She says the City relies on the revenue to keep operations going.

This year’s tax increase for an average house is 2.29 per cent. Humphrey says that translates to a $55 increase, accounting for both the City-imposed rate increase as well as the increase in property value.
