KAMLOOPS — Yet another iconic community event has fallen victim to the physical distancing recommendations surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a news release posted on the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc (TTS) Facebook page, the 41st annual Kamloopa Powwow will not take place.

The event regularly attracts thousands of people to the Powwow Grounds on the Tk’emlups Reserve around the August long weekend.

This year’s event was scheduled to take place July 31 to August 2, but the Kamloopa Powwow Society says it wants to protect the health and safety of all participants.

The Secwepemc Nation has declared a state of emergency in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the TTS has suspended all facility bookings in line with recommendations from B.C.’s provincial health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry.
